History of HOM
The Founder
Ms. Doris C. Ringgold, the founder of House of Metamorphosis (HOM), was born January 1, 1931, and went to meet her maker on February 26, 1995, at the age of 64. Ms. Ringgold had been active with drug abuse programs since the early 1960’s.
Shortly after moving to San Diego from New York in 1975, Ms. Ringgold founded the House of Metamorphosis on December 7, 1976. Ms. Ringgold saw the need to organize a residential drug rehabilitation center. Initially, the purpose of the center was to create the desire within the residents to modify their behaviors.
Doris was highly respected in her field and received numerous awards. Dedicated to prevention of substance abuses, she was an advocate of community awareness. Ms. Ringgold was a member of various boards of directors throughout the County and Nation. In 1995, to honor her achievements, January 8th was proclaimed “Ms Doris C. Ringgold Appreciation Day” by the Fourth District of the City of San Diego. Her legacy and dreams continue to be fulfilled through the success of the program.
The House
The House of Metamorphosis began operation on December 7, 1976, at its present location. Ms. Doris Ringgold, who was the founder and had been the Executive Director since inception, saw a need to organize a drug rehabilitation center. The purpose of the center, initially, was to create the desire within the residents to modify their behavior.
HOM has graduated approximately 2,700 individuals from its live-in residential program in the past thirty-two years. The residents have participated in many worthwhile community events. Many of the Alumni of the House of Metamorphosis have re-entered society and become respectable members of their respective communities, both here in California and across the country.
House of Metamorphosis’ past success and endurance is due to its dedicated staff, Board of Directors, and outside assistance from the community. Our continued success depends on this continual support from individuals and the San Diego community at large.
Testimonials
one-on-one counseling sessions that allow clients to focus one on one life’s difficulty with a staff counselor and interact, and encourage others, while being encouraged in HOM group session. While going through the process of the program, HOM enrolled me in Adult Educational classes. While in the HOM treatment program they reunited me with my older sister, with my family by my side, supporting me, Graduation Day was the BEST DAY OF MY LIFE and after quite few years, I’m still clean and sober and continue to be involved in the NA Community, where I am seen as a role model and leader.”
-Bob (December 2021) “We are all here to help each other.” House of Metamorphosis (HOM) Staff and Clients
“Hello everyone, my name is T.B., I came to the House of Metamorphosis (HOM) on Mother’s Day some years ago. I’m not sure what I was looking for at the time, but I knew life couldn’t continue based on the path I was on. I came ready for a change. Being ready for change is pivotal in changing the trajectory of your life. When I learned to accept the HOM program and trust their process, I stopped trying to do things my way, noticing my life changing. Little by little I noticed the transformation of my life being restored. Since my life’s transfiguration, I’ve graduated and regained the love and trust of my two children. They both have graduated with their Bachelor of Arts degree as professional chef and as a teacher. Life has been an ongoing joy as I have been featured in Essence Magazine for overcoming addiction and moving forward. I have joined my children with attaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, with my next goal, completing my M.Ed. most recently. I’ve become the proud owner of a daycare center here in Virginia. The House of Metamorphosis changed my life because I allowed them to work in me and taught me to transform my life. If you sincerely want to change, give yourself patience to go through the process of what your heart sincerely needs. Every day, be willing to open your heart and keep it open and your heart, mind, soul, strength and spirit will find a safe place to trust people who still care about your life’s growth. At the House of Metamorphosis (HOM), the staff, from top to bottom, know what they are doing! I’m proof that if you allow HOM to breathe new life into you, it will be genuinely displayed in your life, your friends and family. Last, the lessons I learned at HOM are still with me today, they will forever be engrained in me, allowing them to help every stage of my life to become a greater woman today !
Thank You, House of Metamorphosis (HOM)
Sincerely for Friend for life -T.B.
